On why I love in-home lifestyle sessions
Updated: Mar 2, 2019
This is one of my favorite photos of me and my daughter.
Obviously I didn't take it. We were in the middle of everyday after-bath chaos and my husband grabbed my camera and snapped a few photos.
This is what I look like 90% of the time. This is how my children see me. This is me mom-ing. And yet, there are so few photos that commemorate it.
We spend so much time getting dressed up and getting our children to look and smile at cameras, and we are sort of missing the point. The point is, it really should be, capturing a feeling. That's what this photo does for me. It reminds me of the love I have and the sacrifice I've given for my children. It reminds me of the love I have for my husband for seeing this moment as a moment of beauty worth saving. I know it will invoke a feeling of what it was like for me with two young children, and for my kids it will invoke a memory of what their mom was like when they were little. I hope it invokes memories of a warm and loving household.
This is why I love documentary, lifestyle photography. I love the in-home sessions so much because it really allows a unique opportunity to document a part of life that makes up so much of our time, but rarely is cherished through film. In these sessions, you and your family can have a dance party, play in the backyard, bake cookies or read together, or simply lounge around and love on each other.
One of the concerns many people have when considering these sessions is that their house may not be "photo ready". I know this would be one of my concerns. While yes, those sessions are lovely when the homes look like something straight out of a magazine, the point of a lifestyle session is to show life as it is. When scheduling a session, we can discuss 1-3 rooms that you'd like to focus on, that have the best lighting and most importantly where the family feels most at home in. Those rooms can be cleaned and tidied, but should still look recognizable to the family, so everyone is at their most comfortable.
